01. Achromatic Scale (7 Steps: Black to White)
Achromatic Scale/Primary & Secondary Scale (6 steps each/side by side)
Black to White/Matching values: Violet, Blue, Green, Red, Orange & Yellow.
02. Tint Scales:
Start with pure color, progressively add more white. (One for each primary color; warm and cool: 7 steps each).
03. Primary Color Intensity Scale:
One square of pure color/Three vertical squares=black, gray,
White/Three vertical squares showing pure color + tint/tone/shade/.
04. Achromatic/Chromatic Gray Scale:
5 Step Vertical Achromatic Scale
7 Step Horizontal Chromatic Gray Scale
(match #3 achromatic value with a color of your choice + its compliment +
white, gradually increasing intensity to pure color by reducing the amount of compliment + white).

05. Color Intensity Scales:
7 steps each, transitional color, no spaces, pure color at each end of scale.
3 scales using warm colors/3 scales using cool colors/1 scale using warm/cool
combination.
Ex.: Begin with warm yellow at one end. Mix a warm violet and paint it in at the
other end. Add a small amount of violet to the yellow for the next step (close to warm yellow). Add a small amount of yellow to the violet for the next step (close to violet). Repeat until the colors “meet” somewhere near the middle of the scale. The square where the colors meet should have the darkest value.

06. 15 point Double Primary Color Wheel:
Paint a double primary color wheel with correct temperature placement.
07. Color Value Scale:
Six colors of your choice arranged vertically with 7 steps each.
Scales begin with pure color on one end. Progressively add very small amounts of the complementary color and then white as you move up the scale. The result should be soft, neutral (almost pastel) versions of the original color. (Do not allow your color to shift to the complementary hue, if it does, you have added
too much complementary color).

08. Chromatic Gray Scales:
4 steps each.
6 each using pure Cool Primaries + Compliment=Chromatic Neutral +White=Chromatic Gray
6 each using pure Warm Primaries+Compliment=Chromatic Neutral +White=Chromatic Gray
3 each using pure Cool/Warm Primaries+Compliment=Neutral+White=Chromatic Gray
4 steps each.
6 each using pure Cool Primaries + Compliment=Chromatic Neutral +White=Chromatic Gray
6 each using pure Warm Primaries+Compliment=Chromatic Neutral +White=Chromatic Gray
3 each using pure Cool/Warm Primaries+Compliment=Neutral+White=Chromatic Gray
09. Color Value Scale:
9 steps of Chromatic Gray of your choice, gradating from light to dark.
Paint a continuous strip of gray value #5 that intersects the center of each of the tiles in the
scale.
Notate resulting value shifts in both tiles and central strip.

10. RGB, CMYK & RYB Scales:
Paint one of each with correct temperature and secondary colors.
Paint 9 2” squares surrounding a smaller, central square. You will have three rows of three
squares. For each row (horizontal) choose a different color for each of the centers.
In each vertical row, mix a different mid-value chromatic gray and paint the larger portion of
each square. Observe and document shifts in value, intensity and contrast.
